Woman punished for dropping litter

A MOSSLEY woman has been ordered to pay hundreds of pounds after being found to have dropped litter by a road.

Isabell Driscoll’s original punishment was also multiplied after she ignored numerous warnings to pay.

Tameside Magistrates Court heard on Thursday, October 6 that Tameside Council enforcement officers traced a bag of household waste, found dumped on Huddersfield Road in Stalybridge on February 8 to her address on Brackenhurst Avenue.

Ms Driscoll, who pleaded guilty, was offered the opportunity to pay a £80 Fixed Penalty Notice, served under section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

However, she ignored numerous opportunities to pay the fine so prosecution proceedings were launched.

Now she has been told to pay the £80 penalty plus £490 of costs – a punishment that has been well received by the authority.

Cllr Denis Ward, Tameside Council’s executive member responsible for climate emergency and environmental services, said: “Littering is totally unacceptable and disrespectful to the local community and environment.

“Most people don’t litter and they dispose of their waste responsibly. But for those that do, we will investigate and take enforcement action wherever we can.

“Thank you to our enforcement officers for their tenacity and determination to investigate cases and leave no stone unturned in finding and taking action against those responsible.”
