Successes at Commonwealth Karate Championships

THREE locals people returned home with medals after competing for England at the Commonwealth Karate Championships which were staged in Birmingham.

Carrbrook teenager Jack Wilson, who competes for Tameside Karate, picked up a silver and bronze as his successful year continued.

There was also a silver for Jasmin Williams and bronze for Michelle Knowles, both from the Mossley-based Ken Yu Kai Club.

Jack, one of the youngest competitors, won silver in the seniors as he competed against 22 nations as well as the best from the United Kingdom with many of the competitors aged in their twenties and thirties so much more experienced and physically developed.

The former Mossley Hollins Hollins High School student also won bronze in the U21s, again competing against 22 nations with 44 competitors in his class.

There was a silver for Jasmin, 15, also a pupil at Mossley Hollins, in the 14/15 years girls’ section on her international debut.

Michelle, 32, who has represented England at world and European championships, was making her Commonwealth debut and won bronze in the 18 years and above category.

• There was more success for Jack the following weekend as he won gold in the senior kata at the Basel Masters in Switzerland.

Jack, a former pupil at Mossley Hollins High School, has already competed in France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Poland and Egypt this year and was recently ranked seventh in Europe and 25th in the world, both at U21 level.

He competes in the World Karate Federation’s 1-Series and aims to pick up points to qualify for the sport’s Premier League which features the world’s top 100 players.

• The Mossley Ken Yu Kai Club will have 20 of its members competing at the national championships which are to be held in Bury in November.
