Swailes makes a winning return

FORMER Oldham Athletic player Chris Swailes made a winning return to the area.

The former central defender was manager of North East club Dunston UTC which won at Mossley in the Isuzu FA Trophy.

And in a strange quirk, Swailes, 51, was reunited with one of the training tops from when he played for Latics between 2005/07 which had been bought years ago by The Correspondent sports editor Tony Bugby.

In an illustrious career Swailes played League football for Doncaster Rovers, Ipswich Town, Bury who he joined for a club record £200,000, Rotherham and Oldham Athletic.

Swailes created a piece of history in 2016 when he became the oldest goalscorer in a Wembley final at the age of 45 in Morpeth Town’s 4-1 win against Hereford FC.

It was Swailes’ third win at Wembley in the FA Vase as he had previously achieved it with Bridlington Town in 1993 and Dunston UTS in 2012.

He has been manager of Dunston UTS, which play in Northern Premier League, east division, since October 2016.
