Kids make a Meal of fundraising effort

PUPILS at a Stalybridge primary school may not have thought they were making a big difference but their huge fundraising efforts will help feed impoverished children for a year.

Children at St Peter’s, on Castle Hall Close, took part in a range of activities over Lent and raised a huge £1,569.10 for the Mary’s Meal charity.

And locally-based volunteer Rob White spelled out just what the work down by those thousands of miles away from where it operates in Africa will do.

Rob White presents fundraising cheque Mary’s Meals

When he turned 70-year-old, he walked from St Peter’s in Stalybridge to St Peter’s in the Hazel Grove area of Stockport, raising more than £2,000.

He said as he addressed the whole school after being presented with a cheque: “It will feed nearly 100 children for an entire school year.

“It costs £15.90 to feed a child for that length of time in the countries where Mary’s Meals work.

“These kids don’t have anything to eat. They have to go to school to get something. They want to go to school, they want to get an education but they’re just too hungry.

“So Mary’s Meals provides the food at school so the kids go in, get a warm meal before they start their class and then they can concentrate for the rest of the day.

“On behalf of Mary’s Meals, I’d just like to say to the children of St Peter’s a massive thank you. They won’t realise how many children they’ve helped feed.

“And I’m planning what to do for my 75th birthday now!”
