Primary school to pitch in?

AN AUDENSHAW primary school will have a new facility for its pupils to use if planning permission is granted – a MUGA pitch.

St Stephens, on Audenshaw Road, has applied to Tameside Council to put the surface in place of a pre-fabricated former classroom building, which is currently not used.

If granted, it will enable a host of new activities and ‘improve upon current outdoor learning provision for the school.’

As well as getting rid of the current structure, the area immediately around it will also be cleared before the MUGA pitch is installed.

Documents for the application, lodged by the governors, state: “It is proposed to demolish the existing 13.5m long x 10.3m wide prefabricated former classroom, clear the localised area of the school site of debris and vegetation and create and install a new dedicated MUGA pitch to improve upon current outdoor learning provision for the school.

“The proposed MUGA pitch is to be located on the footprint of the existing pre-fabricated building. It is to be enclosed by 2.4m high powder coated mesh fencing.”

Those looking to install the new facility insist any remaining electric, gas or water supplies will be capped and there appears to be no asbestos on the site.

They also hope that by the end of the work, it will be like nothing was ever there.

They also add: “Prior to any structural demolitions taking place, the site supervisor and plant operatives will walk the building to familiarise themselves with the building and any potential issues.

“The site will be enclosed by use of both existing 2.4m high perimeter fencing and heras type fencing.

“Warning signs will also be displayed on the site boundary in clear and visible positions.

“The flat roof structure and pre-fabricated wall panels will be removed by use of a demolition excavator fitted with a grapple type attachment.

“It will strip the entire building perimeter and all such material will then be reloaded mechanically into suitably sized skips and transported from the site for disposal.”

Tameside Council’s Speakers Panel (Planning) committee will decide whether to grant or refuse planning permission.
