Last-hole drama fails to bunker Captain’s Weekend winner Kevin

KEVIN Tottle survived a late scare to win Captain’s Weekend at Werneth Low Golf Club for a second time.

The 53-year-old, who triumphed in the event four years ago, was trapped in a bunker at the last of the 36 holes.

“I got away with an eight on the par five,” he explained.

The triple-bogey did not matter as Kevin, a member for the last 15 years, still won by four shots from runner-up Richard Burke.

Kevin, who lives in Woodley, had a level par nett 140 over the two rounds with 83-15-68 on the Saturday and 87-15-72 on the Sunday.

He said: “It was a great weekend, and the course was in its best condition for years thanks to the head greenkeeper and special thanks to Pat Lanigan, a giant of a man, for his continued support.

Captain Iain White has also been making the news.

Iain, a member for the past 18 years, scored his first-ever hole-in-one at the 168-yard ninth, Monument with a nine iron during a club competition.

“The ball bounced on the left fringe of the green, kicked right and rolled into the hole which was a great feeling,” he said.

Iain was also a member of the winning team in the club’s pro-am which was organised by Colin Rosbottom.

He was joined by Frazer Armitage and Martyn Elley and they had a score of 16-under-par 124, four shots clear of Trad Hire and Sales who were runners-up. In third place with 129 was a team from Denton Glass.
