James Brown feels good after American degree

A STUDENT from Denton has every right to feel good after passing a master’s degree in America – well, he is called James Brown after all!

The Global Grant Scholar, sponsored by the Tameside Rotary Club, has completed a Master of Law (LLM) degree at the University of Michigan Law School.

And he has been offered an internship with the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland before pursuing a post graduate program at the London School of Economics in the Autumn.

After being sponsored by Tameside Rotary, James was hosted by the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor, particularly Ashish and Norma Sarkar, who attended his graduation ceremony.

Tameside Rotarians Peter Holden and Cliff Hall spent time with James before he headed over to Michigan.

And Cliff, Tameside Rotary International and Foundation Chair, said “It was our privilege to sponsor such a worthy and talented young man and Tameside Rotary wish James all the best for the future.”

The Sarkars added: “It was our pleasure to spend time with James over this past school year and see first-hand the excellent opportunities provided by the Rotary International Global Grant Program.

“James is a fine young man with a bright future ahead of him.”

Tameside Rotary also showed its charitable side at its Community Awards Presentation on Tuesday, June 14.

Two main causes, chosen by President Angela Robbins, are Project Recce – a programme designed to support ex-military through transition into new sustainable careers within the construction industry – and Samaritans Rochdale, Oldham and Area, which covers Tameside.

Alison Newell from the Samaritans received £948.17 from money raised from a fashion show
Money was also awarded to St George’s Church, Mossley Ukulele Group, Tameside Community Voices and Adamson’s Military Band for their help at the St George’s Concert.

Many other groups and causes secured funds, including Willow Wood Hospice’s Flower Festival, Mark Howarth, who is going to the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea next year, St Gabriel’s Church’s community garden.

Angela said: “The whole evening was our recognition and thanks to all the charities and organisations for the work they do all year round.

“We put a presentation together of all the things Tameside Rotary had done this last year and it was amazing just how much we got through.

“Things for the community and some fundraising events which meant we could come full circle and give back to the community what had been generously given to us.”
