Young fundraisers smash target

TWO CARRBROOK schoolgirls have exceeded their target after deciding to walk to raise money for a nationally-known charity.

Maisie Kelly and Isla Thornley, who attend Buckton Vale Primary, on Swallow Lane, decided to trek 10 miles during their 10th year in aid of the Bowelbabe Fund.

The cause has risen to prominence through Dame Deborah James, who sadly lost her battle to bowel cancer on June 28.

And after setting a £250 fundraising target for their June challenge, they went one stage further by making £330 as they walked through all kinds of weather.

They said: “Dame Deborah has a daughter that’s a similar age to us and we want to show our support to the family by pushing ourselves to walk 10 miles.

“Thank you so much everyone for the support, we hit our goal after only our first walk.

“But the more we can raise the better so keep the donations coming in for a great charity.”

Isla and Maisie, who are both 10 years old, were inspired by the way Dame Deborah tackled living with the condition.

In total, the Bowelbabe Fund has raised almost £7 million for Cancer Research UK, with the money going towards funding clinical trials and research into personalised medicine that could result in new treatments for cancer patients, including projects in collaboration with partners such as The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and The Royal Marsden.

It will also provide continued support to raise awareness of cancer, such as Bowel Cancer UK’s Never Too Young campaign

In a message, Dame Deborah said: “Your support in establishing the Bowelbabe Fund, continuing to spread the word, and smashing those poo taboos will forever be cherished!

“All money raised will be allocated, with the support of CRUK, to funding causes and projects that I really care about.”

Isla and Maisie’s school said: “They have done so with a smile on their faces.”
