Charity fundraiser to take part in Queen’s Baton Relay

CHARITY fundraiser Andy Hughes described himself as “the happiest person in the world” after being chosen to take part in the Queen’s Baton Relay in the build-up to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this summer.

The 39-year-old personal trainer from Haughton Green received a surprise nomination to carry the baton.

“The first I knew about it was when I received an email to say I had been chosen to carry the baton after being nominated by somebody in the community,” he explained.

“It was amazing. I couldn’t believe it and I feel proper honoured to be chosen to carry the baton.”

Andy will be carrying the baton on Sunday, July 17 (10.52am) for 200m along Wellington Street and Wellington Road, Stockport.

He continued: “I never thought I would be lucky enough to take part in the Commonwealth Games. It never entered my mind, although when you are a kid it’s something you inspire and dream to do.

“To be nominated and accepted for this privilege, you must be an inspiring person, have helped the community and contributed to charity work.

“Yes, I have done all of the above, but this has not been done on my own. I have a great big community team/family around me who have also been part of my journey throughout the last two years.

“When I run with the baton on July 17, I will be running for everyone who has given up their time and effort and supported myself and the charities over the past two years.

“It may be a solo run, but in my heart I will be carrying all of you who have helped me.

“I’m so excited, overwhelmed and truly privileged to be selected to do this, and most of all proud.

“The last two years have not been easy, but this shows when you have a big heart and passion to help others, one day you will reap the rewards.”

When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, Andy was unable to work so put on free online workout classes to help the mental and physical wellbeing of people during lockdown.

They were followed by Team HIIT Man camps which were held outdoors and from which the fundraising challenges were developed.

Last year, Andy and his team undertook the Yorkshire Three Peaks, a 40-mile canal walk, climbed Snowdon, completed a 90-minute HIIT Camp while members took part in the Manchester 10K and did a Manchester to Blackpool bike ride.

In the process, they raised about £10,000 for worthy causes, Tameside, Oldham and Glossop MIND, donations to the foodbank in Haughton Green and for a defibrillator for the same district of Denton.
