IT is a case of second time around for new Denton lady captain Gaynor Wood.
Gaynor, who lives within walking distance of the golf club, also held the post in 2012.
“Golf is ever changing and, since my first time as lady captain, we have seen things like a more relaxed code of dress,” she explained.
“Ten years ago, men would not have been allowed in the clubhouse wearing shorts, but you have to move on.”
Gaynor, who is retired having worked in insurance and clerical fields, is in her 26th year as a member at Denton.

“My late husband was a member, and it was a case of if you can’t beat them, join them.”
Gaynor conceded she started golf too late – aged 48 – to have become an accomplished player.
Her lowest handicap has been 28.
However, she has enjoyed successes in majors, twice winning Lady Captain’s Prize, twice Captain’s Prize and once President’s Prize as well as savouring two holes-in-one.
Denton only has a small women’s section which numbers about 30 members.
“It was double that at one time, and we would like to build it back up again. We attracted several new members during the pandemic which was encouraging,” she added.
Gaynor’s other sporting love is crown green bowls and plays for a newly formed women’s team at Carrbrook which competes in the Parks League on Mondays. And during the winter she plays indoors at Oldham Leisure Centre.
She previously bowled for The Friendship, Romiley, a team no longer on existence.
Together with men’s captain Martin Unsworth, Gaynor’s charity in the children’s Reubens Retreat as well as supporting Prostate Cancer UK.
