AN internationally-acclaimed actress – familiar to British TV viewers for roles in Coronation Street and hit comedy Dinnerladies – swapped the worldwide stage for Denton at a musical showcase.
Sue Devaney, also known as Debbie Webster in the ITV soap, Rita in kids’ classic Jonny Briggs and Liz Harker in Casualty, was at Create Connect’s Sumerr Celebration on the Square, where she showed off her vocal talents.
As well as her acting credits, Sue spent two years on tour with the musical Mamma Mia where she played Rosie.
She travelled with the show to far flung places like South Korea, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur – but she left that all behind for Denton’s Civic Square.
The 54-year-old, who was born in Ashton, went through classic songs from Doris Day to Victoria Wood with a little bit of Edith Piaf.
Musicians, Phil Reynolds and Barry Russell accompanied her while new star Lily Kenny also wowed the crowds.
And the free performance, which saw Sue on an outdoor stage, went down a treat.
Create Connect’s Centre also has a community café where everyone is welcome, especially people who are on their own and would appreciate a chat.
It also invites artists and crafters to sell or display their creations and has been hosting a popular holiday club while the schools are off.
