Spirit of Whit Friday stays alive

WHIT Friday celebrations – the Whit walks and band contests – were cancelled for the second successive year because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

But St John’s Band Mossley did not let the day go unmarked with a couple of impromptu outdoor performances.

They played in the car park at Mossley Co-op and later for a Mossley Cancer Committee event in Carrbrook.

Robert Sykes, chairman and band master, explained they were approached by Mossley Co-op to perform.

The band, formed in 1934, has close links as it is part of the Co-op Local Community Fund scheme which provides financial help for local groups.

Twelve of the 26 band members gathered at Mossley Co-op for the 30-minute session, the first time the band had performed officially since Christmas.

“We have met in small groups for practise, but this was our first official job of the year,” explained Robert.
