Fit Over Fifty back on track after lockdown

FIT Over Fifty are looking forward to offering their services again now that lockdown is easing.

The not-for-profit community interest company has been supporting older people in Tameside for more than seven years but in last 18 months during the pandemic, they have been very quiet.

Now as restrictions ease, they are looking forward to helping people again across the community.Their aim is to help the over 50s improve their health and well-being, overcome isolation and stay independent.

The many services they provide include assisted shopping, befriending, which is supporting people out and about in the community, and holding chair-based exercise sessions.

Helen, the exercise instructor, is over the moon about being able to welcome people back to the sessions.

She said: “The sessions are not only good for the body but they also provide a social outlet for many people. I am looking to seeing the participants again.

“The classes are good for the group but also keep me fit as well!”

Helen stared her classes seven years ago after being trained by the NHS and then launched Fit Over Fifty.

The popular exercise classes bring participants together for chair-based routines building balance, strength, co-ordination and flexibility, and of course fun.

The exercises use soft balls to strengthen wrists, resistance bands to strengthen legs and arms and sometimes you can even play with pom poms!

The group now also proves a service where people can take part in reminiscing groups, held in care homes or community centres.

A previous event project called ‘Those Where The Days’ took participants on a trip down memory lane back to the 1940s, 1950s and the swinging 1960s.
