Kicking up a stink over lack of dog waste bins

A COUNCIL is kicking up a stink about the lack of dog waste bins in Mossley.

The matter was raised by residents from Three Counties Road at a meeting of Mossley Town Council.

They have asked for bins to be provided so dog walkers can deposit bags when leaving the canal towpath rather than dumping waste by their homes.

Requests to both Tameside Council and the Canal and River Trust have been unsuccessful, however, with the local authority saying they can only provide them if they are relocated from other areas.Town councillor and Mossley councillor Stephen Homer criticised the decision.

He said: “I think Tameside Council is wrong. It is a no brainer, and they should provide them.

“Look over the border in Uppermill where the council has dog waste bins on the towpath, bridlepath and Churchill Playing Fields.

“You notice the difference from there to here where bags hang from trees like Christmas decorations, and left on walls.

“Look at the amount of dog waste left in bags here compared to Oldham and the difference has to be the bins.

“Oldham provides bins, and they are used. If bins are within easy reach, people tend to use them.
“As a councillor, I will continue to push for dog waste bins.”

Town councillor Helen Jamison reported dog waste problems at both Mossley Park and Cosgrove Gardens.

Those attending the town council meeting were informed it is not illegal to put dog waste in normal bins, something many members were unaware of.

• Litter pickers in Mossley are also to have their own bespoke bags.

It comes after the hauls of litter pickers, when left on the street for collection, are often mistaken as fly-tipping.

Tameside Council has agreed to provide special bags with stickers so the litter pickers’ rubbish can be clearly identified.

Until they arrive, Mossley Town Council has agreed to provide 1,000 bags.

Mossley Litter Bugs filled more than 600 bags of litter in the first three months of the year.

  1. There is also a problem on the public footpaths that lead from Cemetery Rd to Staley Rd and Miller Hey. I counted 15 bags trodden into the path in a very short distance
