Retirement homes plan met with opposition

PLANS to build more than 30 retirement apartments in Mossley have been met with opposition.

Jigsaw Housing hopes to build an L-shaped block consisting of 31 one-bedroomed properties at a current vacant site on Neild Street.

However, more than eight times as many comments of objection than support have been submitted to Tameside Council.

In total, 17 people had said they oppose the plan, which would see a warehouse demolished to make way for the block, with only two saying they back it.

Jigsaw’s application describes the site, an in-filled former reservoir, as ‘vacant scrubland with a dilapidated warehouse,’ and a tree survey says ash, goat willow and sycamore are earmarked for removal.

And approval would mean a ‘scheme that will integrate cohesively into the existing fabric of Mossley and enhance the area’.

A design statement says: “The proposed development looks to regenerate a disused piece of land and create a residential retirement facility with community gardens and excellent links into the town centre for the new residents.

“The application site looks to propose a more considered style. The development offers a contemporary construction that is sympathetic to the style of Mossley and softly sits within the immediate surroundings which are very mixed.

“We believe constraints and opportunities have been identified and addressed, materials are respectful of the local vernacular and the style of the apartments proposed.

“The layout strives to provide a desirable and pleasant place to live for all future residents. The scheme is an efficient use of land and is in a sustainable area.”

Tameside Council’s speakers’ panel (planning) committee will decide whether to approve or refuse the application.
