A SAME sex couple from Tameside are supporting a campaign to encourage more LGBT+ people to consider fostering and adoption.
Joanne Ryan and Katie Scragg have fostered for Tameside Council for the past four years and are helping to highlight New Family Social’s annual LGBT+ Adoption and Fostering Week from March 1-8.

Both Joanne and Katie worked in retail before setting off on their journey as approved foster parents and said it was the best decision they have made.
Katie said: “We had never looked after children before. We had nieces and nephews, but we didn’t have experience of having a child of our own.
“We didn’t want to be working for an agency and taking children from the other side of Manchester. It would be too difficult for them to stay in touch with their friends.
“When we ultimately chose to go with the council over fostering agencies, we went on a course that showed us what to expect. It was quite intense but for the right reasons.
“It feels amazing to know you’re involved in making an improvement and seeing the children blossom, having the confidence to do things they couldn’t when they first walked through the door”.
This year’s event has a ‘build your family’ theme and the pair are encouraging anyone thinking about getting into fostering to “go for it”.
Joanne said: “I think deep down absolutely everybody could foster. People have got such big hearts, but it’s got to be the right thing for you at the time.
“But definitely, get some information, go to open evenings or talk with other foster carers about their experiences. We’ve never once regretted our decision.
“There is a real sense of pride when these little ones come into your home and become part of your extended family.
“Knowing that you were the one who helped put the pieces together and helped build their confidence before they’re ready to move on, it’s a very proud moment.”
With 80,000 children in care in 2020, the need for foster carers and adopters is greater than ever before.
Tameside Council’s fostering service is looking for local people from all backgrounds to consider fostering children of all ages, including younger children, teenagers and sibling groups.
