Services back open following lockdown

TAMESIDE libraries and markets are back to running a nearly normal service now that the second lockdown has ended and the borough has moved into Tier 3 restrictions.

Ashton, Hyde, Mossley, Stalybridge Libraries re-opened at their normal time on Wednesday 2 December. Denton, Droylsden, Dukinfield and Hattersley Libraries re-opened at their normal time on Thursday 3 December. The Local Studies and Archives Centre is now open for appointments.

Among the services on offer are the return of outstanding items, a click-and-collect service for those not wishing to browse, and pre-booked use of PCs for one hour only (or walk-in if there is capacity). Books, archives, microfilm readers and computers will again be available at the local studies centre but reservations must be made in advance to make sure space and the relevant material is available.

To ensure social distancing measures are kept to, no unaccompanied children under 12 will be allowed in the libraries. Open+ self-access hours will not be operating and events and group activities will not be taking place. However, a full programme of online activities is available. For further details of what facilities are currently available see www.tameside.ov.uk/libraries.

Government guidance does not allow museums and galleries to reopen in Tier 3, therefore Portland Basin Museum and Astley Cheetham Art Gallery will remain closed to visitors until further notice. However, families and individuals can access lots of ideas for cultural crafts and activities as well as outdoor walks and family trails at https://www.tameside.gov.uk/LibrariesandLeisure/ArtsandEvents/Tameside-Culture

Both Ashton and Hyde Market Halls and fixed Kiosks on Ashton Market Grounds remained open during the second lockdown for all stalls selling essential items. However, stalls selling non-essential goods will now also be able to trade as normal. Cafes will continue to run a take away service only. For further details see www.tameside.gov.uk/markets

Residents are being urged to shop local and support local businesses wherever possible – particularly in the run up to Christmas which is such a crucial time for trade.

To check on other services please see the council website at www.tameside.gov.uk.

Tameside Council Executive Leader Cllr Brenda Warrington said: “We’re pleased our libraries and markets are now back to being able to offer residents and shoppers a nearly normal service and as always staff are working hard to ensure they remain safe environments for people to visit. We ask visitors to do their bit by keeping a safe distance from others, wearing face coverings and washing their hands regularly, using the available hand sanitisers. I would also urge everyone to do everything they can to shop local and support local businesses while doing their Christmas shopping. This is a crucial time for trade and, such a challenging year, local businesses need our support more than ever.”
