SCHOOLCHILDREN from Tameside got green fingered planting lots of trees at a local event in Lees Park, on the border of Audenshaw and Droylsden.
The children, aged between 5 and 11 years old planted 155 trees of species including oak, hawthorn, goat willow, osier willow and birch at an event organised by Tameside Council’s Operations and Greenspace and City of Trees.
The City of Trees initiative aims to reinvigorate the landscape of Greater Manchester by planting a tree for every man, woman and child in the area, restoring underused or unloved woodland locations.
So far City of Trees has worked across all the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester, planting trees, creating community orchards and making spaces greener.
Trianna Angele, project officer at City of Trees, said: “It’s so important that young people engage with nature in a practical way and the DEFRA funded ‘Trees for Learning’ project enables them to do just that.
Planting trees helps to give them a better understanding of the world around them and understand about issues such as climate change”.
Anyone who wants to get involved in working outdoors in Tameside’s greenspaces can take part in the volunteer conservation days organised by TMBC’s Operations and Greenspace team and held throughout the year. Additional information about these days is available here:
