TAMESIDE residents who have moved house are being urged to check their electoral registration details ahead of next year’s local elections.
The annual canvass is currently taking place across the borough, giving households the opportunity to make sure the information held on the electoral register is correct.
Local elections are due to take place in Tameside in May 2027.
The council says residents should follow the instructions in the correspondence they receive as part of the canvass, to confirm whether the details held for their address are accurate.
Emma Alexander, Tameside Council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “The annual canvass is our way of making sure that the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate and up to date. To make sure you don’t lose your say at upcoming elections, simply follow the instructions we have sent to you.
“If you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear in the messages we send. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.”
Those who have recently moved home are particularly being encouraged to check their details.

Research by the Electoral Commission has found that people who have recently moved are among the groups least likely to be correctly registered, meaning a change of address can leave people missing from the electoral register if they do not update their details.
Residents who have moved should register at their new address, rather than assuming their previous registration will automatically follow them.
The electoral register is used to determine who is registered to vote in elections and referendums, while registration can also be important for credit checks.
Anyone who is not currently registered can do so online through GOV.UK.
The council’s elections team can also be contacted at elections@tameside.gov.uk if residents have questions about their registration status.
