Tameside residents urged to donate unwanted winter clothes

TAMESIDE residents are being urged to dig out unwanted winter coats, fleeces and warm clothing as a local campaign gets under way to help people struggling to keep warm.

Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club is once again running Wrap Up Tameside, part of the wider Wrap Up UK initiative, throughout this month and into early November.

The club is collecting good-quality winter coats and fleeces, along with scarves, winter hats and gloves, which will be distributed to local organisations supporting people in need.

This year’s donations will go to Tameside Women’s Centre and several local homeless projects.

Coats donated must be warm and suitable for the winter months.

Collection boxes have been placed at several locations across the area:

  • Together Centre, Birch Lane, Dukinfield
  • St George’s Church, Church Walk, Stalybridge
  • Reach Church, Huddersfield Road, Stalybridge
  • Stalybridge Celtic Juniors Football Club, Mossley Road, Ashton-under-Lyne
  • Stalyhill Junior School, Hereford Way, Stalybridge

The campaign was officially launched last weekend at Stalybridge Celtic Juniors Football Club.

The campaign follows a successful first year, when more than 400 coats and fleeces were distributed locally.

Ian Cochrane, who is leading the project for Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club and is District Governor, said: “This is another example of Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club engaging with the local community whilst making a positive impact on the lives of people in our neighbourhoods.

“We are very keen to offer support to local families struggling to keep warm in their homes.

“Last year the club dropped off over 150 winter coats at the Tameside Women’s Centre and provided a further 250 coats and fleeces for local Homeless projects from the Wrap Up Tameside Campaign. These were distributed locally to individuals and families who were in desperate need of a winter coat.”

With colder weather approaching, organisers are hoping local people will check their wardrobes and donate any suitable coats or warm clothing they no longer need.
