A FATHER from Dukinfield who was left critically injured after jumping from a first-floor window to escape a devastating house fire has died.
Marek Bonawenturski, 53, was at his home on Park Road when the blaze broke out at around 4am on September 10.
The fire tore through four terraced homes, including Marek’s, leaving his property completely destroyed.
The father-of-two, who worked as a security guard, is understood to have escaped the flames by breaking the window of his bedroom and jumping from the first floor.
He was taken to hospital following the incident but his death has now been confirmed by the organisers of a fundraiser to support him.
His close friend Edyta Mickiewicz, from Stalybridge, launched the page to support Marek – who was a security guard – after he lost his home and possessions in the fire.
The GoFundMe appeal remains open, with money raised now being used to cover the costs of repatriating Marek’s body to Poland and organising his funeral, allowing him to be laid to rest among his family and loved ones.
More than £5,000 has already been raised towards the £10,000 target.
In an update posted on the fundraising page, Edyta said: “It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we inform you that Marek has passed away. Our hearts are broken, and the magnitude of this tragedy is difficult to put into words.
“During this incredibly difficult time, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for every single donation, kind word, and show of support received so far. Your solidarity gives us immense strength.
“In light of this tragic turn of events, the goals of our fundraiser have changed. All funds raised so far, as well as any further donations, will be fully dedicated to covering the costs of repatriating Marek’s body back to Poland and organising the funeral service, so that we can give Him a proper farewell among family and loved ones.
“If you are able to continue supporting us or sharing this fundraiser, we will be deeply grateful. Thank you for standing with us.”
Edyta has described Marek as her soulmate and best friend of 21 years.
She told the Correspondent: “He was a man with a huge heart, someone you could always count on. He absolutely loved nature, the sunshine, and spending time outdoors. The world will never be the same without him. I miss him every day and will never forget him.”
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, with the investigation and inspection of the property ongoing.
