RESIDENTS across Tameside can now borrow free litter-picking equipment from eight new community locations as part of a push to get more people involved in keeping their neighbourhoods clean.
The new Litter Hubs have been set up at community venues across the borough, giving residents and local groups easier access to the equipment needed to organise their own litter picks.
Droylsden Library was the latest hub to be officially launched, with the Civic Mayor of Tameside joining council staff, volunteers and local litter champions.
The hubs provide equipment including hi-vis jackets, litter pickers and black bags, which can be booked free of charge.
Once a litter pick has been completed, Tameside Council will arrange for the collected rubbish to be disposed of appropriately.
The scheme is intended to make it easier for residents to get involved in looking after their local areas, whether by organising their own litter pick or joining an existing community group.
Councillor Laura Boyle, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services and Greenspaces, said: “We are thrilled to be launching eight new Litter Hubs across Tameside.
“They play a vital role in helping to maintain clean and welcoming communities, and our volunteers and litter champions do a fantastic job supporting local litter picks. Our street cleaning teams work hard to clear litter from across the borough, but they cannot keep up with the amount being dropped. Keeping our streets and neighbourhoods clean is everyone’s responsibility.
“We hope the launch of these new hubs will encourage more residents to take positive action in their communities, whether that’s organising their own litter picks or joining local groups to help care for their local area.”
