DRIVERS, cyclists and pedestrians are being warned to expect disruption as a series of road safety improvements get under way in Ashton and Stalybridge.
The works on Darnton Road in Ashton-under-Lyne and Ridge Hill Lane in Stalybridge form part of Tameside Council’s ongoing highway safety programme.
Improvements are also planned at the junction of Springs Lane and St George’s Street.
The scheme, which started on Monday, July 20, is expected to continue until Friday, September 25.
Among the changes planned are an extension of the existing 20mph speed limit on Darnton Road, which will continue onto part of Ridge Hill Lane, south of Harrison Street, as well as the installation of raised junctions, new footways and additional crossing points.
Council officials say the measures are intended to slow traffic and make it easier and safer for people walking, cycling and using wheelchairs or mobility aids.
The project forms part of Greater Manchester’s Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate all deaths and life-changing injuries on the region’s roads by 2040.
Construction work will take place from Monday to Saturday between 9am and 4pm.
While access for traffic will be maintained wherever possible, motorists are being advised that temporary road closures may be necessary during parts of the programme, with diversion routes signposted. Access for residents, businesses and emergency services will remain in place throughout.
