Gym team hailed as heroes after saving member’s life in Denton

STAFF at Tameside Wellness Centre have been praised for their life-saving actions after a gym member suffered a cardiac arrest.

The incident happened at the centre on Lance Corporal Andrew Breeze Way in Denton, when Hing Fai Ko collapsed in a shower cubicle and became unresponsive.

Concern grew when staff realised something was wrong, prompting the team to force entry into the cubicle before immediately beginning emergency treatment.

Lewis and Hing Fai

Lewis Cotton was first to raise the alarm, while duty manager Anthony Worthington carried out CPR. Colleague Harry Smith then located the centre’s defibrillator and used it as staff fought to keep Hing Fai alive until further medical help arrived.

Thanks to their quick actions, Hing Fai has since made a strong recovery and recently returned to the centre to personally thank the team who helped save his life.

Aidan Gilmore, area manager for Active Tameside, said: “We’re so pleased to see Hing Fai back in the centre, doing what he enjoys, and we wish him all the best as he continues his journey of recovery.

“We’re all really proud of the incredible staff, whose quick thinking saved Hing Fai’s life.”

The incident has also highlighted the importance of CPR training and having defibrillators readily available in public places, with the swift response by staff proving critical in the moments after Hing Fai collapsed.
