Tameside unveils new Civic Mayor for 2026/27

Tameside has officially welcomed its new Civic Mayor, with Councillor Helen Bowden appointed to the role for 2026/27.
Cllr Bowden, who previously served as Deputy Civic Mayor during 2025/26, has represented Hyde Newton ward since first being elected to Tameside Council in 2007.
Known for her strong community involvement, the new Civic Mayor has worked closely with local groups across the borough, particularly supporting mental health initiatives and community wellbeing projects.
Outside of civic life, she also has a keen interest in sport, including football and cycling.
As part of her mayoral year, Cllr Bowden has chosen to support three local charities and organisations — People First Tameside, Hyde Festival Theatre and the Wooden Canal Boat Society Ltd.
Her husband, Mr Leslie Bowden, will serve as consort during her term in office, while Linda Marshall has been appointed as chaplain.
Meanwhile, Councillor Jacqueline Owen, who represents Longdendale ward, has been named as the borough’s new Deputy Civic Mayor
