TAMESIDE’S Civic Mayor Shibley Alam held the final fundraiser of her mayoral year with a warm curry night in Hyde town centre.
The event at Esha Indian Cuisine on The Square raised £1,182 for the three charities supported during her year in office – Willow Wood Hospice, Hyde Bangladesh Welfare Association and the Women’s Trust Fund for The Christie.
Around 50 guests attended the evening, enjoying food sponsored by the restaurant, along with entertainment from Jimmy (Jamil).
A raffle and auction featuring a range of prizes also helped boost the fundraising total, while the event received additional support from Sajjadur Rahman and Amin Babar Choudhury.

Former Hyde Werneth councillor Shibley, alongside her Consort Mohammed Khairul Alam, thanked everyone who attended and praised the support she has received from the community throughout her year as mayor.
She also reflected on the significance of becoming the first woman born in Bangladesh to be the mayor of any authority in the North of England – something she said she will always be proud of.
The evening was also attended by past and present councillors from across the borough, including former mayor Taf Sharif, who was Tameside’s first Muslim and ethnic minority mayor in 2023/24, and helped organise the fundraiser.
Councillor Helen Bowden, who represents Hyde Newton ward on Tameside Council, was also among those present, ahead of officially taking on the chains of office at her inauguration on Tuesday, May 26.
The final total raised during Shibley’s mayoral year for her chosen charities is expected to be announced soon.
