Countdown continues to Stalybridge Carnival’s huge 50th anniversary celebration

WITH just weeks to go until Stalybridge Carnival returns, this year’s milestone celebration is shaping up to be one of the biggest in the event’s history.

It rolls back into town on Sunday, June 28, marking the 50th occasion of the much-loved tradition.

Preparations are now in full swing behind the scenes to make sure the golden anniversary is one to remember.

Residents can expect a packed day of entertainment across the town, with the famous parade once again taking centre stage as it winds through Stalybridge from 1pm after setting off from Bayley Street.

The Stalybridge Festival Committee, which organises the event, say they have received many entries from local schools, dance groups, community organisations and businesses eager to be part of the landmark occasion.

This year’s celebrations will also feature support from Global Grooves, the internationally-known carnival arts group based in Mossley, bringing extra colour and spectacle to the procession.

Event organiser Ian Cochrane said: “Stalybridge Carnival has very much become an integral part of our heritage and culture, and the Festival Committee appreciates the many thousands of people from Stalybridge and beyond who come along year after year to support the carnival.

“A big thank you to Dukinfield & Stalybridge Rotary Club and Jigsaw Housing for their financial donations towards the cost of this year’s carnival. It is much appreciated.”

As well as the parade, Cheetham Park will once again host a full day of family entertainment from 11am, including a large funfair, food stalls, craft and community stands, and live performances in the arena.

There will also be a strong nostalgic feel to this year’s event, as former Stalybridge Carnival Queens are being invited to take part in a special float celebrating the carnival’s history.

Meanwhile, Stalybridge Motor Bike Club, which celebrates its own 50th anniversary next year, is teaming up with the committee for a motorbike show in Cheetham Park.

Elsewhere around the town centre, visitors can catch performances from Tameside Voices in Armentieres Square while crowds wait for the parade to arrive.

Inside the Victoria Market Hall, formerly the Civic Hall, So Retro will host a retro-themed event featuring classic vehicles, live entertainment and trade stalls.

After months of build-up and planning, the countdown is now firmly on for one of Tameside’s biggest community events.
