Jon Macken signs on at Stalybridge for another season

JON Macken and his backroom staff will remain in charge at Stalybridge Celtic Football Club next season.

Their commitment to stay at the helm for 2026/27 follows a campaign that saw the club come within touching distance of promotion.

Former Preston North End and Manchester City striker Macken has overseen a steady resurgence at Bower Fold since taking charge in October 2024.

After guiding Celtic to a sixth-placed finish in the Northern Premier League West Division and a run to the Cheshire Senior Cup final in his first season, 2025/26 brought further progress.

Celtic finished third in the league and reached the play-off final for the first time since 2008, with the points tally achieved the club’s highest since 2001 and second only to a standout season in 1990.

Macken has now taken charge of 86 matches and will lead preparations for another push next season, with hopes of going one step further.

Speaking after confirming his stay, the 48-year-old told club media: “I really am delighted that me and my staff have extended our stay with the club for the new season.

“We’ve had a really positive year and improved so much on and off the pitch since we first arrived, and although we just fell short this year, we’re determined to continue improving and take the next step next season.

“A huge thank you to the owners, committee, our players and staff for your hard work this season and a massive thanks to the supporters for your magnificent backing. Let’s rest up and get ready to go again in the summer.”
