A CHARITY shop in Ashton-under-Lyne is calling on local people to step forward and help keep its doors open, warning that volunteers are vital to its day-to-day survival.
The YMCA shop, based at the Ladysmith Shopping Centre, is looking to recruit new volunteers to support its busy operation and help fund essential services in the area.
Open seven days a week, the store relies heavily on people giving up their time to keep things running smoothly – from serving customers and working the till, to sorting donations and creating eye-catching displays.

Mel Bamber, Retail Field Manager, said volunteers are the backbone of the organisation’s retail network.
“Volunteers are at the heart of every YMCA shop that we have. They play a vital role in supporting our mission to create safe, inclusive and connected communities.”
Like many charity shops across the UK, the Ashton branch depends on volunteer support not just to stay open, but to generate income that feeds directly into frontline services. These include housing support, youth programmes and wellbeing initiatives delivered by the YMCA.
For those who do get involved, YMCA says the role offers more than just a chance to give back. Volunteers can gain hands-on experience in retail, build confidence and become part of a wider support network within their community.
“It gives people the opportunity to build confidence, develop retail and customer service skills, and become part of a supportive community. They also act as friendly ambassadors for the YMCA,” Mel added.
The charity is encouraging anyone aged over 21 to consider signing up, with flexible opportunities available. Those interested can drop into the Ashton shop and speak to the team, or find out more online at https://ymcaheartofengland.org.uk/volunteer/
