WOMEN from across Greater Manchester came together in Ashton-under-Lyne to mark International Women’s Day with a celebration centred on kindness, connection and giving back.
A gathering at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir brought together over 100 women of all ages and backgrounds for a two-hour programme themed “Celebrating Women: Give to Gain”.
The event on Sunday, March 29, at the Hindu temple on Lees Road focused on how small, selfless acts can have a wider positive impact in the community.

Through presentations, shared experiences and moments of reflection, attendees were encouraged to consider the role of patience, inclusivity and understanding in everyday life.
One of the highlights was a short drama exploring the relationship between friends in a mentor-mentee dynamic, showing how mutual support and generosity can help both people grow – a message that resonated strongly with the audience.
There was also a lighter moment with a laughing yoga session, which saw participants actively joining in and embracing the benefits of laughter for both physical and mental wellbeing.

The event finished with a lively performance of devotional songs and traditional music.
The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Shibley Alam, said she felt honoured to be invited to the celebrations.
“It has been inspiring to see women of all ages sharing messages of connection, unity and respect for one another,” she commented. “It has been wonderful to see such a diverse audience from across Greater Manchester, participating in what has been an engaging and joyous event.”

Riya Patel, a volunteer with BAPS UK & Europe, added: “His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj regularly reminds us that by selflessly serving others and appreciating their virtues, we bring joy to those around us and grow spiritually ourselves.
“We hope participants are inspired to practise these values in their daily lives and help create a more compassionate and harmonious society.”
The temple, which serves as a key place of worship for the region’s Hindu community, regularly hosts educational, spiritual and community activities.
