A WALKING football club has got its kicks out of helping the area’s NHS charity with its annual fundraising tournament.
Tameside Striders chose the Tameside and Glossop cause to benefit from the event on Saturday, March 14 at Denton Youth FC, on King Street.
Each year, the group selects a charity to support at the tournament, and this year chose to support Tameside Hospital’s Dementia Fund.
And the donation of £403.73 will go towards supporting patients at Tameside Hospital who are living with dementia.
Also known as Denton Walking Football Group, Tameside Striders is a friendly, community-based group that meets twice weekly.
The group offers a slower-paced, reduced-risk version of football designed primarily for older adults, promoting exercise, wellbeing and social connection.
Sessions run throughout the year, with players aged 60+ taking part in inclusive, mixed-ability games focused on enjoyment rather than competition.
While the group does take part in occasional competitive matches, its focus is on regular internal games and creating a welcoming environment.
Players meet every Tuesday and Thursday, with sessions tailored to different age groups, and finish with a chance to socialise over a cup of tea.
Lawrence O’Toole, secretary of Denton Walking Football Group, said: “We’re proud to support such an important cause in our local community.
“The support from everyone who took part made this donation possible.”
Emily Whelan, charity manager at Tameside and Glossop NHS Charity, added: “We are incredibly grateful to Tameside Striders for their fantastic fundraising efforts.
“Donations like this make a real difference to patients living with dementia and help us enhance the care and support we provide.”
