HYDE Town Hall has reopened its doors to the public – a month after a small fire forced the temporary closure of the historic building.
Tameside Council says the incident, which occurred on February 24, originated in the basement and was caused by an external electrical fault.
While the fire itself was minor, smoke damage affected parts of the building on Corporation Street, leading to several weeks of repair and recovery work.

In a statement on Monday, March 23, the local authority confirmed both the town hall and Hyde Library are back in operation, with library services returning to their usual staffed opening hours.
However, the popular Open+ access system remains unavailable for now due to an ongoing technical issue.
Visitors can once again book rooms and access services as normal, marking a return to routine for one of Hyde’s key civic spaces.
Councillor Hugh Roderick, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Finance and Resources, acknowledged the disruption caused by the closure and thanked residents for their understanding.
He said: “Thank you to everyone for your patience while we’ve been getting the building ready to reopen. While the fire was only very small, it did lead to some smoke damage in the building which we’ve had to address but we’re very pleased to welcome people back into the building now.”
