Mossley pond revival gathers pace with new grant

AN UNUSED patch of land in Mossley is continuing its transformation into a thriving green space, thanks to the dedication of local volunteers and a timely funding boost.

Andrew Street Pond Association has received £640 from Tameside Council’s Community Grants fund.

It is helping to fund the planting of a 14-tree orchard – an investment that’s already taking root in more ways than one.

The group, which began in 2022 with just a handful of residents, has grown into a committed team of 10 to 20 volunteers who meet weekly to improve the pond and surrounding area.

Their efforts have turned unused land into a space that now attracts visitors, school groups and a growing variety of wildlife.

Ducks, Canada Geese, Kingfishers and Herons have all been spotted at the site, alongside an increase in pond life and insect activity – helped along by new planting areas designed specifically to support biodiversity.

The orchard is one part of a wider programme of improvements. Volunteers have also created a waterfall, installed bird boxes and a bug house, and even introduced beekeeping to the area.

As the project evolves, it’s clear the impact is being felt well beyond the pond itself, bringing the community together while creating a more welcoming environment for both people and wildlife.

Mossley councillor Stephen Homer, who is also Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity, said: “It is great to reflect on how the funding has supported local community groups in bettering the neighbourhood.

“The team at Andrew Street Pond have done an amazing job transforming the space and making it welcoming and accessible for all residents.

“We strongly encourage as many groups as possible to apply for the funding to help support the important work they do to create a safer, stronger Tameside.”

For the group behind the project, the funding has played a key role in sustaining progress.

Steve Kiy, from Andrew Street Pond, said: “The 2025-26 grant was our fourth successful award with Tameside Community Safety (TCS) since 2022.

“The grant application guidelines and processes are very straightforward, and we were able to submit a compliant bid plus present our project at the TCS annual event. It is worth noting the TCS team is very helpful, should you require any clarification at any stage!

“We have enhanced the whole area and brought together the local community year on year making super progress in and around the pond, helped immensely by the TCS funding. We’re looking forward to this year’s orchard ‘bearing fruit’ in 2026 and for years to come!”

The Community Grants scheme offers up to £2,000 to eligible organisations across Tameside, including registered community groups, CICs and charities. Projects must focus on preventing neighbourhood crime, reducing harm and offending, or strengthening communities and tackling inequalities.

Applications for the latest round of funding close on Friday, March 27.
