New minibus set to transform school trips for Cromwell pupils

Students at Cromwell High School are set to benefit from greater independence and opportunities after the arrival of a brand-new, fully accessible minibus.

The vehicle was delivered following two years of fundraising, supported by a significant contribution from the Kentown Wizard Foundation and backing from Variety the Children’s Charity.

The special handover event was attended by a number of guests, including the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Shibley Alam, Hyde and Stalybridge MP Jonathan Reynolds, and Variety’s Trust and Foundations Manager Richard Scott.

Headteacher Suzanne Pass said the new addition would make a “massive difference” to pupils and staff.

“We’ve worked really hard with our Team Cromwell, who raise funds for lots of things, but the bus will make a huge impact,” she said. “The support from Variety and the Kentown Wizard Foundation has made all the difference.

“The new bus has wheelchair-accessible seating, meaning we can potentially take a whole class out together. Before, we were restricted and wheelchair users often had to be split into different groups. We couldn’t have done this without the help and support from the local community.”

Richard Scott praised the achievement, highlighting the increasing challenges facing charities.

“It’s fantastic to be here presenting a 17-seater sunshine coach with a tail lift,” he said. “We currently have two years of applications outstanding, so this is a great achievement. Fundraising is becoming more challenging across the country, but we’ve been able to deliver this thanks to the support of the Kentown Wizard Foundation.”

MP Jonathan Reynolds, who has previously visited the school, spoke about the importance of specialist education provision.

“People may know I have a son with autism, so the special educational needs system is something I’m very familiar with,” he said. “This is an amazing place. What the young people receive here, and what the staff provide and continue to build on, is simply inspiring.”

The new minibus is expected to open up more opportunities for trips, activities and experiences, ensuring all pupils can take part together.
