One of Greater Manchester’s most respected property figures, Edward Mellor, has died at the age of 86.
Widely regarded as a pioneer of modern estate agency in the region, Mellor leaves behind a legacy built on professionalism, integrity and a lifelong belief that the business of property is, above all, a business about people.
Edward Mellor was first and foremost an estate agent. His career was built on trust, straight talking and the understanding that reputation is earned over decades, not transactions.

Long before he founded his own company, he had already established himself as one of Greater Manchester’s most respected agents.
He was known for his market knowledge, his consistency, and the long‑standing relationships he built with buyers, sellers, solicitors, banks, and fellow professionals. Many of those relationships lasted a lifetime.
In March 1983, Mellor opened the first Edward Mellor office in Gorton. His vision was clear from the outset: an independent estate agency combining strong local knowledge with high professional standards and genuine care for clients.
The business grew steadily, but guided by his belief that quality, consistency and integrity should always come first.
He believed passionately in the strength of family businesses and the long‑term thinking they encourage.
That belief shaped the culture of Edward Mellor Estate Agents from day one. Today, the company is led by his son, Colin Mellor, with the next generation, his grandchildren, Jessica and Austin, also part of the business. Their involvement is a direct continuation of the values he instilled.
Although Mellor retired from day‑to‑day operations in the mid‑1990s, he remained closely connected to the firm.
His name remains above the door not as branding, but as a promise, a reminder of the standards, values, and commitment on which the business was built.
Today, Edward Mellor Estate Agents continues to operate across Greater Manchester under the principles he established more than forty years ago.
