A 93-YEAR-OLD resident affectionately dubbed ‘Queen Beryl’ is proving that it’s never too late to start a joyful new chapter in life.
Residents and staff at Fir Trees Care Home in Dukinfield have welcomed back one of their most cherished characters.
Beryl Owen’s humour, warmth and unmistakable personality have made her a firm favourite since her arrival.

Beryl first came to Fir Trees for respite care in December after spending Christmas with her family. Having experienced several falls while living alone, she was initially reluctant to accept ongoing support.
But a visit from Home Manager Nicole Gunning and Deputy Manager Sharon Smith helped change her perspective – especially when the conversation turned to everyday pleasures, including trips to Marks and Spencer’s.
Beryl spent much of her life making wedding dresses alongside her daughter and crafting handmade items. She met her husband at just 20, and the couple shared 63 years together, raising two children, Ivan and Michelle, who she proudly describes as having grown into “remarkable adults”.
After several days of discussion and a visit from her social worker, Beryl made the decision to stay permanently at Fir Trees recently. According to her family, the change has brought real peace of mind.
Her daughter Michelle said she was relieved to see her mother safe, socially engaged and enjoying life again.
Beryl herself is clear about how she feels.
“I’m living my life again,” she said, praising the support of staff and describing the home as being like a “5-star hotel”.
Now fully settled, Beryl has thrown herself into life at Fir Trees. She enjoys socialising with other residents, sharing jokes with staff, taking part in activities and sticking to her much-loved breakfast routines. Regular outings – especially shopping trips – have become a highlight, supported by Wellbeing Coordinator Katie Hey.
Speaking about Beryl’s journey, Nicole said: “It’s wonderful to see Beryl embracing life so fully. Our team is committed to creating a place where every resident feels valued, supported, and able to enjoy each day. Beryl’s happiness and decision to stay with us permanently is the greatest reward for all the hard work our staff put in.”
