Hyde United manager Martin Coyne resigns

HYDE United are looking for their third manager of the season following Martin Coyne’s resignation.

The Tigers’ chief quit after the 2-1 home defeat by Rushall Olympic left them third bottom of the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

A decision on the future of coaches Harry Bunn and Chris Shaw will be made after a successor is found, with a further announcement expected by Hyde’s fixture away at Gainsborough Trinity on Tuesday, January 27.

But after a wretched run of 11 league matches without a win – their last success came against Morpeth on November 1 – Mr Coyne decided enough was enough after little over three months in permanent charge.

A club statement released on Saturday, January 14 said: “After today’s home defeat to Rushall Olympic, Martin Coyne has tendered his resignation as manager, which has been accepted by the board.

“Whilst enjoying a successful spell after taking over as manager following the departure of Nick Spooner, Martin has found a win elusive in recent games, and today’s result has seen the club fall back into the relegation zone.”

Mr Coyne, who will work with the club’s juniors, stepped up as manager following an interim spell after Nick Spooner resigned in September.

He was handed the full-time role at the beginning of October, but results and a slump into the relegation zone mean another change.

Hyde United chairman Steve Hartey said: “First and foremost, Martin is a Hyde United fan, and he has always done what is best for the club.

“He can leave with his head held high in the knowledge that he gave it his best shot.

“I am really sorry it didn’t work out but am pleased that he will remain with the club to continue the fantastic work he has done with the juniors.”
