ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE is gearing up for a packed calendar of community events this year, after securing the first slice of new Pride in Place funding.
The Ashton Neighbourhood Board has confirmed that £8,000 will be allocated to Ashton Town Team to deliver a year-long programme of seasonal events, timed to coincide with the reopening of the redeveloped Market Square.
Organisers say the programme is designed to draw more people into the town centre, support independent traders and give residents more reasons to spend time in Ashton.

The funding forms part of a wider £41 million government investment across Tameside, with almost £20 million earmarked for Ashton over the next decade.
Longer-term plans focus on improving public spaces, making streets safer and strengthening pride in local neighbourhoods.
For 2026, residents can expect a mix of family-friendly attractions, heritage events and celebrations of local businesses.
The schedule currently includes Amazing Ashton on March 21, featuring live music, comedy and activities, and a Sci-Fi Celebration on May 2 in support of the Hyde Fundraisers’ annual event.
Summer highlights include the Independent Business Awards in July and a Dinosaur Show on August 8, while Heritage Day on September 19 will shine a spotlight on Ashton’s past through vintage photography and displays.
The year will round off with Small Business Saturday on December 5, bringing festive crafts, giveaways and character appearances into the town centre.
Phill Brown MBE, chair of the Ashton Neighbourhood Board, said the funding marked an important step for the town.
“This first allocation of Pride in Place funding represents another key moment for Ashton,” he said.
“We’re investing in our shared future, creating safer streets, showcasing our heritage, and strengthening the heart of our community to build on the transformation already underway across the town centre.
“These events will be a celebration of Ashton’s spirit. We’re proud to create opportunities that bring people together, highlight our heritage and strengthen the sense of belonging that makes our town special. There will be more announcements of further projects in the coming weeks.”
Councillor Bill Fairfoull, chair of Ashton Town Team, said the funding would have a direct impact on local traders.
“I would like to thank the Ashton Neighbourhood Board for facilitating this funding. This now allows us to bring an exciting programme of events to Ashton in 2026,” he said.
“These events will support the many hundreds of small businesses who operate daily in our Ashton and hopefully encourage more families to visit our town centre.”
More events are also expected to be announced in the lead-up to the Market Square reopening.
