A VETERINARY practice in Ashton-under-Lyne is encouraging local pet owners to kick off the new year by focusing on their animals’ health, with a campaign aimed at prevention rather than cure.

Gourley Veterinary Surgeons on Wellington Road has launched a pet wellness initiative designed to help cats and dogs live healthier, happier lives – and to catch early signs of illness before they become more serious.
Throughout January, the practice is offering free wellness consultations with a vet or veterinary nurse.
The appointments use a life stage assessment tailored to each pet’s age, looking at factors such as weight, mobility, diet and overall wellbeing. Owners will then receive personalised advice on nutrition, exercise and preventative care.
The campaign also includes a technology-led element for dog owners. In partnership with PitPat, dogs can receive a voucher for 50 per cent off an activity monitor, allowing owners to track daily movement and tailor exercise routines to suit their pet’s individual needs.
Clinical Director Amanda Smith said January was an ideal time to refocus on health – not just for people, but for pets too.
“January is the perfect time for a fresh start and a focus on health, and that includes your pets. During the free consultation, we will carefully evaluate each pet who comes through our door to identify how their overall health can be improved and detect any underlying conditions early.
“Our team will then provide expert advice and support, to help every owner take those first steps towards a healthier lifestyle for their pets.”
Veterinary professionals say maintaining a healthy weight and regular activity can significantly reduce the risk of common conditions, improve mobility in later life and support a pet’s mental wellbeing.
The Ashton practice is urging local residents not to wait until a problem becomes obvious, stressing that early intervention can often make treatment simpler and more effective.
Free wellness consultations are available until the end of January, with appointments needing to be booked by January 31. Pet owners can contact the practice directly by phone or book online via the CVS Vets website.
