PASSENGERS in Tameside are set to see a major shake-up in rail travel next year.
Services through Ashton-under-Lyne and Stalybridge are due to join Greater Manchester’s Bee Network in December 2026.
With one year to go, the move will bring rail into the same integrated system as buses and trams, creating what leaders say will be the first fully joined-up public transport network outside London.
The first two rail lines to make the switch will include routes serving Stalybridge and Ashton, introducing contactless “tap in, tap out” ticketing, clearer fares and better connections between trains, buses and trams.

Passengers can also expect station upgrades, including Bee Network branding, improved travel information and step-free access at key locations. The changes are expected to support regeneration in both Ashton and Stalybridge town centres by making them easier to reach for commuters, shoppers and visitors.
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “With one year to go until rail joins the Bee Network, we are on the cusp of delivering a fully integrated, world-class transport system for our global city-region.
“These changes will make everyday journeys easier and open up new opportunities for people across Greater Manchester. I am excited for what the next 12 months will bring as we build a better, more connected future for us all.
“This is just the beginning – more rail lines will follow in 2027 and 2028, as we continue our journey to make travel safer, easier and better connected to local communities, so people feel they are getting good value for money.”
He added: “Bringing rail into the Bee Network, alongside our long-term vision for rail in Greater Manchester, are all part of our plan and commitment to maximise good growth across the city region for the next decade and beyond which our residents and businesses deserve.”
Looking further ahead, plans are also being explored for tram-train technology, which could eventually bring Denton into the Bee Network. If delivered, bosses say this would provide greener, more direct connections into Manchester and reduce reliance on car travel.
Tameside Council’s leader said the changes could be transformational for the borough.
“Tameside is on the brink of a transport-led transformation that will drive economic growth and breathe new life into our town centres,” said Councillor Eleanor Wills.
“Strategic developments in Ashton and Stalybridge, coupled with enhanced rail connections and future tram-train opportunities for Denton, will position us as one of the best-connected areas in the country.
“This is about more than just infrastructure, it’s about creating stronger links and simpler journeys across Greater Manchester and beyond.”
From January 2028, eight rail lines and 64 stations – including Ashton, Stalybridge and nine other stations across Tameside – are expected to be fully integrated into the Bee Network, with daily and weekly fare caps in place.
The remaining stations are due to join by 2030.
