A MAJOR Stalybridge road is set to be made one way for its entire length.
The Correspondent reported in June 2024 how it was envisaged that Market Street would see its scheme extended.
Now Tameside Council has issued an order that proposes to carry it out.
If approved, the road would be made one way from its junction with Water Street, where the current scheme ends, to its link with Waterloo Road.

So all traffic would head west, away from the bus station as an effective ‘ring road’ is put forward.
Traffic on King Street, which runs between the bus station and Staveleigh Medical Centre, would be ordered to travel in the opposite direction to what it does now.
And Queen Street would also be made one way, from Waterloo Road to Market Street.
Explaining the order, Tameside Council told how £19.9 million received from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund plays a part.
It states: “Following the award, a strategy and framework was developed and adopted to outline the vision and projects that the money would be spent on, with consultation from residents and stakeholders.
“Of that funding, £6.1 million has been allocated for improving the public realm in Stalybridge, inclusive of highway improvement works.
“The overall vehicle movement strategy aims to create an outer primary route around the town and a lower priority inner town centre circulation route, which will minimise the dominance of vehicles moving around and through the core of the town centre, thereby improving the pedestrian experience.”
