Stalybridge Old Band to deliver festive brass spectacular this December

One of the UK’s oldest and most celebrated brass bands is set to bring festive cheer to Stalybridge with a sparkling seasonal concert next month.

Stalybridge Old Band will present The Best of Christmas Brass on Saturday, December 6, at Stalybridge Civic Hall. Doors open at 7pm, with the performance starting at 7.30pm.

Founded in 1809, the band is widely recognised as Britain’s first all-brass ensemble. Created by local musicians Thomas Avison and Billy Hall, it began with just eight members before growing into a defining force in the town’s cultural history.

By the 1840s, the band had transitioned fully to brass instruments, helping to shape the sound that would influence the British brass band tradition for generations.

The event, held in the beautifully decorated Victoria Market Hall, promises an evening of festive favourites, toe-tapping carols and rousing brass classics performed by Stalybridge Old Band.

It forms part of a growing programme of cultural activity at Stalybridge Civic Hall, which has become a vibrant hub for live music, theatre, comedy and seasonal celebrations, attracting audiences from across Tameside and beyond.

Councillor Leanne Feeley, Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the magic of live brass music in a truly festive and unique setting. The recent Candlelight Concert sold out in October, so we know there’s lots of music lovers across the borough. We are really excited to welcome the community for a night of big sounds, big smiles, and plenty of festive cheer.”

Tickets are £5 and can be booked online at www.intameside.co.uk/christmasbrass.
