ONE OF the most talked about covers in Tameside is finally on its way after work began at Ashton Market.
Much has been said about the canopy, costing about £4.5 million, which will go over the square.
But the first part of the installation has begun, with steel posts being put in place.
Ashton’s new outdoor facility will have 10 retail food and beverage kiosks with space for at least 90 outdoor market stalls, including 44 situated under the canopy.

It is hoped that will provide space for a range of uses including cultural activities and civic events. There will also be a range of seating and play opportunities.
Plans have been designed using feedback and views from traders – a number of whom have already signed up for kiosks, which will arrive soon, residents, and stakeholders.
The process of installing them will take contractors The Casey Group approximately three weeks to install.
Once up, the roof beams and timber supports will follow, which Tameside Council says creates, ‘a strong and attractive cover for traders and landmark structure for Ashton.’
Other parts of the scheme have started to appear, including the fan shaped paving, foundations for the rain gardens and steps leading to what will be the new canopy space.
Designers Buttress stated: “The scheme is designed to reflect the town’s traditional market qualities and community spirit that is fitting for modern-day trading and outdoor events and activities.

“The new design captures the colourful essence of Ashton, highlighting and celebrating its history and unique assets.”
Senior architect Paul Hobson added: “We are super excited work is well underway on site which heralds the start of this exciting transformation of the heart of Ashton.
“This area of the town is known for its heritage and rich character and our designs for the new market square draw upon this.
“It is an exciting milestone for Ashton which will transform Market Square for generations to come.”

As the canopy finally begins to take shape, Councillor Andrew McLaren, Tameside Council’s deputy leader and executive cabinet member for growth, housing and homelessness, said “This is a key moment in the regeneration of Ashton Market Square, which will be the beating heart of the town; a modern market and public space enlivened by events, café culture and a vibrant evening economy.
“This is a very high-quality scheme in terms of both the design and the materials used and will future proof Ashton as a destination for visitors for the next generation.”
