CANCER Research UK’s shop in Stalybridge is set to close next year, as part of a nationwide shake-up of the charity’s retail operations.
The store on Grosvenor Street will permanently shut its doors on March 17, 2026, marking the end of its presence in the town centre.
It’s one of 88 shops across the country that the organisation will close by May next year, with a further 100 set to follow by April 2027.

The decision comes as Cancer Research UK scales back its traditional high-street footprint in response to rising costs and changing shopping habits.
Around 600 staff and up to 3,000 volunteers are expected to be affected nationwide, though the charity says it will offer support and redeployment opportunities where possible.
In total, Cancer Research currently operates around 600 stores across the UK, but says many have become financially unsustainable.
The cuts also include plans to shut down its online marketplace in early 2026, ending sales of donated goods through third-party resale sites.
The charity’s chief executive said the closures will make its retail operations more efficient and help protect funding for vital cancer research.
“Without action, many of our shops would struggle to remain viable,” admitted Michelle Mitchell.
“By focusing on a smaller, more efficient retail operation, we can enhance our funding for life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff, and volunteers.
“We understand that this news may be difficult, and we have made these decisions with careful consideration. Our commitment to supporting everyone affected during this transition remains a top priority, and we will provide clear information and assistance throughout the process.”
Despite the closures, Cancer Research plans to open 12 new ‘superstores’ by 2028 – these are larger, out-of-town charity shops designed to offer more space and better value for shoppers.
The closure of the Stalybridge shop will come as a blow to local shoppers and residents, however Cancer Research’s branch on Market Place in Hyde will remain open.
