STALYBRIDGE is becoming even more well-read after it became home to a free library.
Launched this summer by two local sisters, The Woodland Lodge Little Free Library allows people to pick up a book.
Based at the Mottram Road property of the same name, one of the oldest houses in the town and marked with a blue plaque in recognition of philanthropists Robert and Margaret Platt, it is already proving a hit.

And given the homemade project is all about sharing the joy of reading and building a sense of community, that is music to the founders’ ears.
They said: “It’s a really nice feeling to think we’ve inspired more people to read, just from a little cabinet and a few old books we had knocking around.”
The pink cabinet catches the eye with stunning details of hand painted flowers and vines. The organisers have even left treats for four legged friends, including a water station.

Inside the cabinet, books are neatly organised by category, some of which have been returned with personal honest review paperclipped to the cover.
The Woodland Lodge Little Free Library is part of the registered worldwide initiative campaign Little Free Library – https://littlefreelibrary.org/map/ – and is one of only four within Greater Manchester.
Chorlton is site of the nearest scheme, with ithers in Newton-le-Willows, Huddersfield, Ramsbottom and Lymm.
The library has already captured the attention of locals, many of whom have contributed by donating books, leaving reviews, and even offering financial support.

But the sisters are not stopping at books. They are planning to decorate the library seasonally and introduce themed “book bags” – mystery reads wrapped in gift bags for a fun “blind date with a book” experience.
As Halloween and Christmas approach, expect treats, sweets, and festive surprises for trick-or-treaters and holiday visitors alike.

Whether you are looking for your next great read or just want to explore something new, the Woodlands Lodge Little Free Library is open to all.
