YOUNG people in Tameside are being offered the chance to take their first steps towards a career in the arts with a free course launching next month.
Creative Careers, delivered by Mossley-based carnival arts organisation Global Grooves, will run at The Vale arts centre from Wednesday, November 5.
Open to anyone aged 13 to 18, or up to 25 for those with additional needs, the sessions will give teens the opportunity to explore music, dance and visual arts while learning about the many paths into the creative industries.
The programme runs over nine Wednesday evenings until January and includes hands-on tasks, practical workshops, and the chance to meet role models who are already making their living in the arts.
Additional taster days and crew training will also run on weekends, while participants can gain real-world experience by helping deliver large-scale events in Tameside, Stockport, Rochdale and Manchester.
For many, the course has already proven life-changing.
Saskia, 18, who took part last year, said: “This course was absolutely amazing with incredible people on it and I’m very glad I signed up and attended.
“It really helped me understand that a career in the creative industry is possible. I received four unconditional offers from universities for costume design and am now so excited to step foot into industry with all the knowledge the sessions have provided.”
Global Grooves say they are especially keen to support young people who might otherwise face barriers to opportunities, including those who are neurodivergent, not currently in education or work, or have no formal qualifications.
Artistic director Holly Prest said: “Creative Careers is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and join a network of creatives based where you live.
“You will have the opportunity to explore your creative side, feel excited about learning new things and look forward to future volunteering, placement, and employment opportunities with the organisations and artists involved in the course. It’s an absolute must for young people in Tameside who are interested in a creative career.”
The first session takes place from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Wednesday, November 5, at The Vale, in Unit 2 Vale Mill on Micklehurst Road.
Travel expenses can be claimed, and access needs can be discussed by contacting Global Grooves at holly@globalgrooves.org or on 0161 870 6895.
