PEOPLE living at a housing scheme in Tameside are enjoying a vibrant new outdoor space following a complete transformation of their communal garden.
Gibson Terrace, a supported project in Ashton-under-Lyne, has seen its under-used garden area brought to life with new seating, timber benches, planters and a wide range of herbs, fruits and flowers.
The transformation was all thanks to a collaboration between partners and residents.
It included removing old canopies, timber furniture and overgrown planters and has created a welcoming space where residents can relax, connect and enjoy nature.
The garden was officially opened by Jigsaw Housing Group’s chief executive Brian Moran and Chris Casey, chief executive of The Casey Group, at a community event attended by residents and their children, who played a key role in the planting and creative artwork.
The project was delivered by The Casey Group through their Improving Lives Fund, which supports initiatives that create lasting impact in local communities.
John Walmsley, social impact executive at The Casey Group, said: “Casey is proud to continue our commitment to the Tameside community, where in partnership with Jigsaw Homes we helped turn an under-used communal area into a welcoming garden.
“With residents joining the final planting session, the project has created a true sense of ownership and community connection.”
Donna Kelly, group director of neighbourhoods and support at Jigsaw added: “We would like to thank Casey for all their hard work on this fantastic project.
“It has created a great space for our residents and their families to enjoy.
“The children have been very involved in the planting, and they also now have a separate dedicated space for them too.
“This has been a great collaboration from all involved!”
Additional funding and support came from Drees and Sommer UK, DK Architects, the Jigsaw Foundation, and the STAR (Supported Temporary Accommodation Residents) group, who contributed to gardening activities and helped bring the vision to life.
And one of Gibson Terrace’s residents, Stacey, said: “My two girls loved getting involved with the planting, and they are keen to make sure that the garden thrives.
“We all love the garden now and it is really nice to have a place where we can all sit out and chat and enjoy the outdoors.”
