Historic Godley church goes on the market

A DISUSED church in Hyde could soon be redeveloped after going up for sale.

St John the Baptist in Godley has been put on the market with a price tag of £50,000.

Stockport-based estate agent MBRE is inviting offers for the Grade II listed church and grounds on High Street – which closed for worship in 2015.

The structure measures approximately 4,300 square feet and is set within a churchyard with burials measuring around 1.5 acres.

In sales documents, MBRE say: “The property benefits from F1 use and similar uses such as education, a museum or a public hall will not require a change of use.

“The property may also be suitable for alternative uses or redevelopment, which will be subject to planning and listed building consent.”

Any application to change the use of the building will be judged by Tameside Council’s Speakers Panel (Planning) committee.

Any sales would be subject to Church Commissioner and Diocese of Chester approval, including agreeing the future of any burials, monuments or tombstones within the churchyard.

St John the Baptist dates back to 1849-50 and was designed for the Church Commissioners by E.H. Shellard.

The tower dates back to 1878 and the church was first listed with Historic England in 1986.
