New rules could affect Tameside postal voters

POSTAL voters in Tameside are being warned that they may need to renew their application.

New government rules mean that postal votes expire after three years and voters need to reapply for them to be renewed.

Tameside Council has said that it is contacting everyone who currently has a postal vote in the borough with details of how they can renew their application to vote by post.

Anyone who has held a postal vote since before October 31, 2023, is being urged by the local authority to look out for an email or letter from the council’s elections team.

It will invite people to renew on the government website and won’t ask for any personal details in the first instance.

More information on renewing a postal vote in Tameside can be found on the council’s website at www.tameside.gov.uk/elections/postalrenewal

Tameside Council elections are generally held three years out of every four, with a third of the council being elected each time. Voters are next due to go to the polls locally in May 2026.

The government announced plans recently to enable 16 and 17 year olds to vote in all elections, with a new bill expected to be brought before Parliament to rubber stamp the proposals.
