CELEBRATION and reflection were in equal measure as hundreds commemorated 80 years since the end of World War Two at an event in Ashton-under-Lyne.
Residents of all ages came together in King George the Fifth Playing Fields to mark Victory over Japan (VJ) Day.
The event on Friday (August 15), organised by Tameside Council, combined moments of remembrance with a free day of family fun.
Visitors paid tribute to those who served and sacrificed during the conflict, while also celebrating the freedoms enjoyed today.
The packed programme also featured live performances, Outdoor Arts sessions and interactive workshops, alongside some family-friendly activities.
Councillor Hugh Roderick, the local authority’s Executive Member for Finance and Resources and Armed Forces, said: “A huge thank you to the teams for organising a great event to commemorate such an important occasion.
“The impressive turnout reflects Tameside’s deep appreciation for servicemen and women past and present and all they’ve done for us. It is fantastic that, 80 years on, the community can come together to remember and celebrate the end of the Second World War.”
